California
California is the home of the freeway. Driving to and around our mountain regions can be fast and effortless. However, we do live in a modern society addicted to automobiles. The drive can also be maddingly slow. The trick is to pick your drive time. When possible, avoid Friday & Sunday afternoons. Check the weather and road conditions. CALTrans does an excellent job of providing up-to-date information (800-427-ROAD or 916-445- 1534). Their crews are also expert in snow removal. They work around the clock to keep the major highways open. If you are not driving a four-wheel drive vehicle with snow tires, carry chains. When chain controls are in effect, there are usually crews of "chain monkeys" who will help you in or out, for a price. It's wise to top off the gas tank and carry extra water and edibles before you head into the mountains. If you do find yourself driving in a storm keep your speed down, even if you have a four-wheel rig. Patience is winter driver's best friend.
When traveling in California and the Reno, Lake Tahoe area, try our toll free 800 service, 1-800-427-ROAD (7623). This service is available free from any touch tone phone, cellular phone or pay phone. All other areas outside of California you can dial 916-445-7623 to reach the same service. This Information system provides current information regarding the condition of the California State Highway System. The information provided covers incidents that cause significant delays to the normal flow of traffic such as, but not limited to, full closures, 1-way traffic controls, lane closures, construction, maintenance projects, and emergencies. Normal commute traffic, ramp closures and traffic flow conditions are not included in these reports. The information in each report is the latest information reported to the Highway Information Center.
