Corsica
Driving in Corsica is probably the best way to see the island, given the unreliability of public transport, especially in the heaving summer months, and the roads are usually quite uncongested.
On the negative side, Corsica is riddled with hairpin bends and sharp, narrow roads which can make driving a little hairy. Speed is limited to 50km/h in most places and 90km/h outside built-up areas, however, most local drivers never stick to the road rules and police are dangerously lax with speed checks.
There are 4-5 major roads on the island which form a loop between the main towns of Ajaccio, Bonifacio, Aleria, Conca, Bastia, Calvi and Corte. Many of these routes run along the coast, especially from Bonifacio up to Bastia, which makes for pleasant travelling.
The more minor roads cover ground further inland and scenic routes are also mapped out. These are often found on the West Coast of the island between Sartène and up and around the Cap Corse to Bastia.
Fuelling stations can be hard to come by on the more remote roads so it is advised to take spare petrol in the event of a breakdown.
Balzac described Corsica as 'a French island basking in the Italian sun', but the island has a singular character that is entirely its own. It has been French for only 200 of its 4000-year existence, and has many indigenous traditions - gastronomic, musical and cultural. It is beautiful, wild, rugged, unspoilt and a touch old fashioned. The birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, Corsica is not short on either bonhomie or national pride. It is the ultimate après outdoor destination - physical exertion in the elements by day, French wine and cuisine by night, and a peaceful night's sleep to boot.
