Driving in Sardinia Italy

Below are three example of the most scenic and quiet driving routes in the whole of Sardinia. When you have rented your hire car we suggest you try at least one of these routes whilst in Sardinia.

Nuraghic Ruins and Muravera Road
Begin at Oristano. Worth seeing in Oristano are the Piazzo Roma Italy, the nearby Corso Umberto (the town's charming shopping district), and the San Francesco (a 19th century church that houses some noteworthy artwork). From here, take the S 292 south (which eventually becomes the S 131). Along the way, stop at the Basilica of Santa Giusta (2 miles from Oristano), a somber 12th century Italian church. Also of note along this route is the picturesque town of Arborea (11 miles south of Oristano). The next stop is the town of Barumini, noted for its Nuraghic site, Nuraghe Su Nuraxi (1 mile west on the Tuili road). Head back south to Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia. Worth seeing in Cagliari is the magnificent 13th century cathedral, the National Archaeological Museum, the Botanical Gardens and the remains of a Roman amphitheater. From Cagliari Sardinia, head northwest on the Strada di Muravera. This Sardinian driving route winds through some beautiful red-walled gorges.

Strada Arbatax-Dorgali
One of the most scenic routes in Sardinia, the road from Dorgali to Arbatax (S125) winds through breathtaking gorges.

Costa Smeralda
From Olbia (you can rent a car at the airport there), drive north on the S125 following Costa Smeralda signs. The road twists and turns past dramatic cliffs and above inviting coves. Be sure to bring swimming and snorkeling gear, as opportunities to stop and swim are numerous along this stretch of highway. Other stops to consider are Porto Rotondo and Porto Cervo (two bustling Sardinian port towns), Palau (from here departs a ferry to the island of La Maddalena appreciated by naturalists for its wild state), Santa Teresa di Gallura where you'll find a plot of bizarre natural sandstone formations that resemble animals. Here, Costa Smeralda ends but if you've got the time and energy, continue north along the Costa Paradiso to Castelsardo, where you'll find the ancient Doria Castle and Santa Maria di Tergu (a 12th century church).
